Where did the inspiration for the characteristic mascots of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games originate from?
The official mascots Phevos and Athena, are notable for being among the few anthropomorphic representations in the history of the Olympics.
Their design was influenced by a 7th-century BC terracotta statuette from Boeotia, which is regarded as an ancient religious artifact and referred to as a “doll” by the curators at the National Archaeological Museum.
The mascots' names draw from the Greek gods Apollo (Phevos) and Athena, embodying a connection between the rich legacy of the ancient Games and the principles of contemporary Olympism, which include participation, brotherhood, equality, and fair play.
